Fuktighetsmidler

Fuktighetsmidler, or humectants in English, are ingredients commonly found in cosmetic and personal care products. Their primary function is to attract and retain moisture. They work by drawing water from the deeper layers of the skin or from the atmosphere and binding it to the stratum corneum, the outermost layer of the skin. This helps to keep the skin hydrated and supple.

Various substances can act as humectants. Common examples include glycerin, hyaluronic acid, sorbitol, and urea. These ingredients are beneficial for dry or dehydrated skin types, as they help to replenish lost moisture and improve the skin's barrier function. They are often found in moisturizers, serums, masks, and lotions.

Beyond skincare, humectants are also used in hair care products to prevent dryness and brittleness. In household products, they can help to maintain moisture levels in items like paint or inks. The effectiveness of a humectant can depend on the surrounding humidity levels; in very dry environments, some humectants might draw moisture from the skin if the atmosphere contains less water. Therefore, humectants are often formulated with occlusive agents, which form a physical barrier on the skin to prevent moisture loss.
