Fugetætning

Fugetætning is the process of sealing joints between construction materials with a flexible sealant to prevent the passage of water, air, and contaminants, and to accommodate movement between substrates. It is used in buildings for purposes of waterproofing, weatherproofing, and finishing, and is essential around windows, doors, façades, bathrooms, kitchens, floors, and in expansion joints.

Common sealant materials include silicone, polyurethane, polysulfide, epoxy, and acrylic latex. Silicone sealants are widely used for exterior and wet-area applications due to high elasticity and weather resistance, while polyurethane sealants offer good adhesion and chemical resistance for various substrates. Epoxy sealants provide strong, durable bonds in industrial settings. Acrylic sealants are often used indoors for non-structural joints and are paintable. Sealants are selected for properties such as movement capability, adhesion to substrates, elasticity, UV and weather resistance, and compatibility with surrounding materials.

Application involves joint design and depth, surface preparation, and the use of a backer rod to control sealant depth and enable correct movement. The sealant is applied with a caulking gun, smoothed, and allowed to cure under conditions specified by the manufacturer. Primers may be required for difficult substrates.

Design considerations include accommodating expected joint movement, maintaining waterproofing, and ensuring compatibility with substrates and any coating systems. Maintenance involves regular inspection and replacement of deteriorated joints to prevent leaks and damage. Standards and best practices emphasize proper surface preparation, appropriate material selection, and correct installation techniques to ensure long-term performance.
