Fränkisch

Fränkisch refers to a group of High German dialects spoken in Franconia, a historical and geographical region in Germany. These dialects are part of the East Franconian dialect continuum and are distinct from Standard German. The pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar of Fränkisch dialects can differ significantly from standard High German, often presenting unique phonetic features and idiomatic expressions.

There are several sub-dialects within Fränkisch, broadly categorized by geographical area, such as Upper Franconian (Oberfränkisch), Middle Franconian (Mittel fränkisch), and Lower Franconian (Unterfränkisch). These variations can be noticeable even between neighboring villages. Historically, Franconian dialects played a role in the development of German, but they have largely been superseded by Standard German in official and public contexts.

While not mutually intelligible with Standard German for speakers unfamiliar with it, Fränkisch dialects are still actively spoken by a significant portion of the population in Franconia. For outsiders, understanding Fränkisch can be challenging, but it remains an important marker of regional identity in Franconia.
