Unterfränkisch

Unterfränkisch is a dialect spoken in the Lower Franconian region of Bavaria, Germany. It belongs to the East Franconian dialect group, which is part of the High German dialect continuum. The area where Unterfränkisch is spoken is roughly congruent with the administrative district of Lower Franconia.

Key characteristics of Unterfränkisch include specific vowel shifts and consonantal developments that distinguish it from Standard German and neighboring dialects. For example, the Standard German "ei" sound often appears as "aa" in Unterfränkisch, as in "Stoan" for Stein (stone). The "g" sound at the beginning of words can sometimes be softened to a "ch" sound. Regional variations exist within Unterfränkisch itself, with subtle differences between the dialects spoken in areas like Würzburg, Schweinfurt, and Aschaffenburg.
