Frostvrije, often seen on appliances as frost-free or no-frost, refers to a design principle in refrigeration and climate-control equipment that prevents frost buildup on interior surfaces and foods, eliminating the need for regular manual defrosting. The term is widely used in Dutch-speaking markets and in Europe to describe refrigerators, freezers, and combined refrigerator-freezers that maintain a frost-free interior.

In frost-free systems, frost forms when water vapour in the air condenses and freezes on cold evaporator coils. To prevent this, these appliances use an automatic defrost mechanism. A heater or electronic control periodically warms the evaporator coils long enough to melt any accumulated frost, with the resulting water typically channeled to a drain and collected in a condensate pan that evaporates away. A fan or optimized air circulation helps distribute cold air and reduce frost formation. Some units use continuous low-level defrost or sensor-based cycles to minimize frost without excessive temperature fluctuations.

Variants include no-frost (frost-free in all compartments) and low-frost or partial frost-free designs, which reduce but do not completely eliminate frost in some areas. Frost-free models offer the convenience of no manual defrosting and can maintain more consistent temperatures, but they may consume more energy due to the defrost heater and cooling fan, and some users notice drier air inside the fridge.

Frost-free technology is common in household refrigerators, freezers, and multi-compartment units, and it is also used in commercial refrigeration where frost buildup would impede performance.
