It describes organisms, typically plants or certain insects, that cannot survive freezing temperatures. These organisms have physiological adaptations or life cycle stages that make them vulnerable to cold damage, leading to death or severe injury if exposed to frost.

Plants described as frostsietämättömiä often include those originating from warmer climates or those that have not developed mechanisms to protect themselves against ice crystal formation within their tissues. This can include a lack of antifreeze proteins, the presence of ice-nucleating substances, or cellular structures that are easily ruptured by ice.
