Frostholms

Frostholms is a coastal archipelago and municipality in the northern region of Nordland. It comprises five main islands and numerous minor islets, with Frostvik on the central island as the administrative center.

The archipelago lies in a subpolar maritime climate, featuring cold, windy winters and cool, short summers. The landscape includes conifer forests, tidal flats, and exposed bedrock, with several protected areas to conserve habitats and seabird colonies.

Archaeological finds indicate human activity dating to the early medieval period. The municipality was formally established in the 19th century, historically relying on fishing and timber, and later expanding into tourism and conservation.

The economy centers on small-scale fishing, shellfish aquaculture, and forestry, with tourism growing around nature, boating, and winter events. Frostvik serves as the economic and administrative hub, connected to the mainland by ferries and a local road network; Frostvik Airport handles seasonal air service. Energy is supplied by wind farms and a small hydro plant.

The population is around 3,800 residents with a low population density. Frostlish is the regional language, with broader Nordish and other languages spoken among migrant residents; cultural life emphasizes maritime heritage, seafood cuisine, and annual Winter Light celebrations.

Notable sites include Icewatch Lighthouse, Frostholms Nature Reserve, and the Glacial Ridge, which attract hikers and birdwatchers. The archipelago also maintains several small museums and historic ships preserved in Frostvik.
