Fronthaulrajapinnat, often referred to as fronthaul interfaces, are crucial components in modern telecommunications networks, particularly in the evolution towards 5G and beyond. They represent the connection between the distributed radio units (RUs) and the centralized or co-located baseband units (BBUs) in a cellular base station. This architectural split, known as a disaggregated or virtualized base station, allows for greater flexibility and efficiency in network deployment and management.

The fronthaul interface is responsible for transporting the digitized radio signals and control information between the RU and the BBU. This demands high bandwidth, low latency, and precise synchronization. Various technologies and protocols are employed to meet these stringent requirements, with common examples including the Common Public Radio Interface (CPRI) and Open Base Station Architecture Initiative (OBSAI). However, these traditional protocols can be inefficient for higher frequencies and denser deployments.

Emerging solutions are exploring more flexible and efficient fronthaul transport options. These often leverage packet-switched networks, such as Ethernet, combined with specialized protocols like eCPRI (enhanced CPRI) or specific Layer 2/3 transport mechanisms. The goal is to enable a more cost-effective and scalable fronthaul, facilitating the deployment of technologies like massive MIMO and beamforming, which generate significant amounts of data. The development and standardization of fronthaul interfaces are ongoing, driven by the need to support increasingly complex and demanding wireless services.
