Frekvensveid

Frekvensveid is a term that appears in certain contexts, particularly within signal processing and audio engineering, and can be translated to "frequency-weighted" in English. It refers to a measurement or assessment that takes into account the differing sensitivities of human hearing at various frequencies. Our ears are not equally sensitive to all sound frequencies; we are generally more sensitive to mid-range frequencies (around 1 kHz to 4 kHz) and less sensitive to very low and very high frequencies.

When a measurement is frequency-weighted, it means that the raw measured values are adjusted to better reflect how humans perceive the loudness of a sound. This is crucial when evaluating noise levels, for example, as a sound that measures high on an unweighted scale might not be perceived as equally loud or annoying by a person. Different weighting curves exist, such as A-weighting, which is the most common and approximates the sensitivity of the human ear at moderate sound levels. Other weightings like C-weighting or Z-weighting (which has no weighting) are used for different purposes.

In essence, frequency-weighting is a method to make objective measurements align more closely with subjective human perception of sound. This allows for more relevant and practical assessments in fields where sound levels are a critical factor.
