Freiwilligendienstgesetz

The Freiwilligendienstgesetz (Voluntary Service Act) is a German law that regulates voluntary social year (FSJ) and voluntary ecological year (FÖJ) services. Established in 1973, it aims to provide young people with the opportunity to gain practical experience in social or ecological organizations, thereby contributing to society while developing their personal and professional skills.

The FSJ is designed for young people aged 18 to 30, who commit to a year of voluntary work in social organizations. These organizations include shelters for the homeless, youth welfare centers, and other non-profit entities. The FÖJ, on the other hand, is intended for young people aged 18 to 35, who dedicate a year to environmental protection and nature conservation work. Both services are unpaid and offer participants a stipend to cover living expenses.

The Freiwilligendienstgesetz is administered by the Federal Employment Agency (Bundesagentur für Arbeit) and the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth (Bundesministerium für Familie, Senioren, Frauen und Jugend). It provides a framework for the coordination and support of voluntary services, ensuring that participants receive adequate training, supervision, and support throughout their service year.

The law also includes provisions for the recognition of prior voluntary work and the possibility of extending the service period under certain conditions. It aims to foster a sense of civic responsibility and encourage young people to engage in meaningful activities that benefit society and the environment.
