Freischaltung

Freischaltung is the process of enabling access to a system, service, or resource by validating credentials or conditions and activating the corresponding software, hardware, or account. The term derives from Freie (free) and Schaltung (switching, circuit) and in German generally denotes unlocking or authorizing a feature or permission.

In information technology, Freischaltung describes license activation or feature provisioning. After purchase or registration, a software license is activated on the user's device or account, often by inputting a product key, connecting to a licensing server, or performing a verification step. This ensures the software may run and access certain components, updates, or cloud services.

In telecommunications, Freischaltung refers to enabling a device or service, such as activating a SIM card, a prepaid plan, or a new phone line. Providers perform provisioning to grant network access and apply applicable terms.

In banking and payment systems, Freischaltung can denote the enabling of a card or account for transactions, online payments, or e-banking, typically after identity verification or risk checks. It may involve risk assessment, PIN activation, or enabling features like contactless payments.
