Fraktográfia is a subfield of paleography, the study of ancient and historical handwriting. Specifically, fraktográfia focuses on the analysis and decipherment of fractured or fragmented texts. This can include manuscripts that have been torn, damaged by fire, water, or other environmental factors, or simply incomplete due to the passage of time. The primary goal of fraktográfia is to reconstruct the original text as accurately as possible, inferring missing words, phrases, or even entire sections based on the surviving fragments, the context of the work, and knowledge of scribal practices of the period.

The methodologies employed in fraktográfia are diverse. They often involve meticulous visual inspection of the physical remnants of the document, utilizing magnification and specialized lighting techniques. Digital imaging technologies, such as high-resolution photography, infrared imaging, and even multispectral imaging, play a crucial role in revealing faded ink or details obscured by damage. Computational methods, including pattern recognition and statistical analysis of surviving text, can also aid in predicting missing elements.
