Fotoprotektiver is a term used to describe substances or measures that protect the skin from the harmful effects of ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun. These harmful effects can include sunburn, premature aging of the skin, and an increased risk of skin cancer. The primary mechanism of fotoprotektiver action is to absorb, reflect, or scatter UV radiation before it can damage skin cells.

Sunscreens are the most common form of fotoprotektiver. They contain active ingredients that either physically block UV rays (physical blockers like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide) or chemically absorb them (chemical absorbers like avobenzone and oxybenzone). The effectiveness of a sunscreen is indicated by its Sun Protection Factor (SPF), which measures its ability to protect against UVB radiation. Higher SPF values offer greater protection.

Beyond sunscreens, other forms of fotoprotektiver include protective clothing, hats, sunglasses, and seeking shade. These methods physically prevent UV rays from reaching the skin. Regular use of fotoprotektiver is crucial for maintaining skin health and reducing the long-term risks associated with sun exposure. It is recommended to apply sunscreen generously and reapply it frequently, especially after swimming or sweating, and to utilize other protective measures when spending extended periods outdoors.
