Fortynnet

Fortynnet is a term used in speculative discussions to describe a modular, fault-tolerant network architecture intended for resilient communication in distributed systems. In this concept, networks are built from self-contained subnets, commonly called fortynets, that can operate independently yet interconnect to form a larger fabric. Each fortynet provides local routing, security, and policy enforcement, while gateway nodes manage cross-fortynet traffic.

The design emphasizes modularity and survivability. Fortynet components include fortynodes (the basic processing and forwarding units), gateways (points of interconnection between fortynets), and a control plane that supports distributed configuration and consensus. Topologies are typically mesh- or ring-based, with redundancy and multi-path routing to tolerate node or link failures. Addressing may use hierarchical or attribute-based schemes to reduce routing state while supporting policy-driven routing.

Operations rely on a lightweight consensus mechanism to maintain topology information, updates, and security associations across fortynets. Security goals include end-to-end encryption, authenticated cross-fortynet handshakes, and integrity checks for routing information to resist tampering and Byzantine faults.

Fortynets are discussed as applicable to environments where centralized infrastructure is impractical, such as disaster zones, remote space-to-ground links, or large-scale IoT deployments. Advantages cited include resilience, scalability, and local autonomy, while challenges include design complexity, interoperability with existing protocols, and potential performance overhead from multi-layer routing.
