Fortifikaatioihin, or fortifications, are defensive structures built to protect a settlement or territory from attack. Historically, they have played a crucial role in warfare and territorial control. The design and complexity of fortifications have evolved significantly throughout history, adapting to advancements in military technology and siege tactics.

Early fortifications often consisted of simple earthworks, such as mounds and ditches, designed to impede enemy progress and provide a vantage point for defenders. As siege weaponry became more sophisticated, so too did defensive structures. The Romans, for example, were renowned for their elaborate stone fortifications, including walls, towers, and gates, which were designed to withstand battering rams and siege engines.

During the medieval period, castles became the dominant form of fortification. These imposing structures, often built on strategic elevated positions, featured thick stone walls, moats, battlements, and towers, offering a formidable defense against medieval armies. The development of gunpowder artillery in the late medieval and early modern periods necessitated further innovation.

The advent of cannons rendered traditional high walls vulnerable. This led to the development of the star fort, or trace italienne, characterized by low, thick walls with projecting bastions. These bastions allowed defenders to cover the entire perimeter with flanking fire, neutralizing artillery bombardments. Modern warfare, with its emphasis on mobile operations and aerial bombardment, has largely rendered static fortifications obsolete, though some specialized defensive structures remain in use.
