Fortettes

Fortettes are small, rectangular fortified structures that originated during the medieval period, primarily used as defensive outposts or watchtowers. These structures were typically constructed from stone, brick, or timber, depending on regional availability and technological advancements. Fortettes served as important strategic points for surveillance, communication, and control of surrounding territories, often positioned on elevated land, river crossings, or key routes.

The design of fortettes emphasized simplicity and functionality. They usually featured thick walls, limited openings, and a compact form to resist attacks and provide a secure vantage point. Some fortettes included battlements, embrasures for shooting arrows or firearms, and small interior spaces for guards or stored supplies. Due to their small size, they were often part of a larger defensive network, complementing larger castles or fortresses.

Throughout history, fortettes adapted to the evolving nature of warfare. In the early medieval period, they primarily supported defense against raiders and rival factions. Later, during the Renaissance and early modern periods, their role shifted to supporting artillery placements and border defenses.
