Formulastyle is a term used to describe the visual presentation and formatting conventions applied to mathematical expressions and symbolic representations in digital and print media. The concept covers aspects such as font selection, spacing, alignment, and the use of delimiters to distinguish mathematical content from ordinary text. Its primary goal is to improve readability, reduce ambiguity, and maintain consistency across documents and platforms.

The origins of formulastyle can be traced back to early typesetting systems, such as the TeX typesetting language introduced by Donald Knuth in the late 1970s. TeX established a set of typographic rules that became the foundation for contemporary mathematical typesetting. Subsequent systems, including LaTeX, MathML, and MathJax, extended these conventions to web environments, enabling the rendering of complex equations on browsers and mobile devices.

Modern formulastyle guidelines recommend using upright styles for variables, boldface for vectors, and italicized mathematical symbols for constants. Delimiters such as parentheses, brackets, and braces should automatically scale with the size of the enclosed expression. Alignment is typically achieved through display math environments that center equations on new lines, while inline math is surrounded by delimiters like dollar signs in TeX-based markup.

Different academic disciplines adopt variations of formulastyle to suit specific notation preferences. For instance, physics texts often use script fonts for tensors, whereas engineering literature may favor typewriter fonts for polynomials. Most digital publishing platforms provide style sheets or configuration options to enforce a consistent formulastyle throughout a document or collection of works.
