The term is not widely standardized and appears primarily in discussions of contemporary formal experimentation. In its broadest sense, formssonnets may refer to any sequence or single poem that engages with more than one traditional sonnet model or that deliberately juxtaposes distinct formal rules within a single work.

Common features of formssonnets include alternating rhyme schemes drawn from different traditions (for example, a Petrarchan octave followed by a Shakespearean sestet), variable line counts that depart from a fixed fourteen-line length, and intentional shifts in meter, cadence, or volta placement. Formssonnets often rely on enjambment and caesura to manage transitions between subforms, and may employ connected parts such as a double sonnet or a cycle that changes form stanza by stanza.

Practitioners typically align formssonnets with experimental or rigorous formalism, arguing that cross-form constraints can intensify imagery or argument. Critics, however, regard the approach as potentially opaque or gimmicky if not clearly motivated by content. Examples cited in criticism usually emphasize the poetics of constraint and continuity rather than content across the entire work.
