Fonetiset

Fonetiset is a theoretical framework for representing phonological inventories and their realizations in a compact, machine-readable transcription system. It is intended to support cross-language comparison, field documentation, and computational processing while focusing on a fixed set of phonetic units.

The core of Fonetiset consists of a finite inventory of phonetic units divided into consonants, vowels, and suprasegmental features such as length, tone, and stress. Each unit can be modified by a small set of diacritics that encode distinctions like voicing, aspiration, nasalization, vowel height, and tonal contour. The design emphasizes transcription efficiency and readability, with attention to ASCII-friendly symbols and straightforward mappings to more extensive systems when needed.

Relation to IPA: Fonetiset is not proposed as a replacement for the International Phonetic Alphabet. Rather, it is presented as a simplified, implementation-oriented layer that can be used for specific workflows, such as large-scale corpora annotation or rapid field documentation. When greater phonetic precision is required, mappings to IPA are typically provided to preserve interpretability and interoperability.

Applications and adoption: The framework has been discussed in the context of language documentation, pedagogical tools for phonology, and speech technology research. Its adoption remains limited and most often appears in niche projects or instructional materials rather than as a universal standard.

Limitations and criticisms: Critics point to potential ambiguities between symbols and the risk of fragmentation if multiple variants of Fonetiset exist. Proponents argue that a disciplined, shared subset can improve consistency in particular research and development tasks.
