Folkgames are traditional play activities rooted in a community’s culture, transmitted across generations and typically organized outside formal sports structures. They encompass physical play, pursuit and strategy, dexterity challenges, counting games, and games of chance, and are often tied to festivals, harvests, or everyday village life. Because they rely on local environments and improvised equipment, they vary widely from place to place.

Historically, folk games emerged from communal life in rural and urban settings before the modern sports system coalesced. They function as socialization tools, teaching cooperation, fair play, and practical skills while strengthening community bonds. Most require little specialized equipment, enabling broad participation across ages.

Common categories include tag or pursuit games, hide-and-seek variants, jumping and skipping games, traditional ball games, skittles and throwing games, and dexterity challenges such as knucklebones or quoits. Many games are defined by local rules and props, which can change from village to village or season to season.

Preservation and study: Folklorists, anthropologists, and cultural organizations document folk games as part of intangible cultural heritage. Museums, festivals, and school programs, as well as community clubs, work to record rules, teach newcomers, and adapt games for contemporary play while retaining their character.

Modern revivals often emphasize accessibility, inclusivity, and intergenerational participation, sometimes alongside digital archives or teaching materials that capture traditional rules for future generations.
