Fluoroforit

Fluoroforit is a term that appears in some regional or non-English references and may refer to fluorite (calcium fluoride, CaF2). It is not a widely recognized mineral name in major reference works, and standard mineral nomenclature typically uses fluorite for the mineral CaF2.

Fluorite is a halide mineral that crystallizes in the isometric system and commonly forms cubic or octahedral crystals. It has a Mohs hardness of 4 and a vitreous to silky luster. The mineral occurs in a wide range of colors, including colorless, purple, blue, green, yellow, brown, and striped varieties. Fluorite is well known for its fluorescence under ultraviolet light, which is the basis for its name in many languages. Its chemical composition is calcium fluoride, CaF2, and its specific gravity is about 3.0 to 3.2 g/cm³.

Occurrence and environments include hydrothermal veins, lead-zilver and other ore deposits, and carbonate-hosted replacements. Fluorite is often found with minerals such as quartz, sphalerite, calcite, and barite. Major producing regions include China, Mexico, Mongolia, South Africa, and several European and American locales.

Uses and significance: fluorite is mined as a source of calcium fluoride for industrial uses, including flux in steelmaking, and as a raw material for hydrofluoric acid and other chemical processes. It is also collected as a mineral specimen and cut into gemstones, though the latter is less common due to its perfect cleavage and relatively low hardness.

Notes on naming: in some languages fluorite is called fluorit or related forms, and “fluoroforit” may be a regional variant or an informal usage for fluorite rather than a distinct mineral species. For standardized references, fluorite (CaF2) is the accepted term.
