Fluorescein Staining

Fluorescein staining is a diagnostic technique widely used in ophthalmology and biological research to evaluate tissue integrity, especially of the ocular surface and corneal epithelium. It involves applying fluorescein dye, a synthetic organic compound that fluoresces bright green under cobalt-blue light, to the area of interest.

In ophthalmology, fluorescein dye is instilled into the conjunctival sac to detect abnormalities such as corneal abrasions, epithelial defects, dry eye syndrome, or other surface irregularities. Under a slit-lamp microscope equipped with a cobalt-blue filter, areas with compromised cell integrity absorb and retain the dye, highlighting defects or lesions.

The procedure is generally safe and minimally invasive, with the dye rinsed off after examination. Fluorescein is also used during intraocular surgeries and in contact lens fitting assessments. Its high contrast and ease of visualization facilitate rapid diagnosis and treatment planning.

Beyond ophthalmology, fluorescein staining is utilized in biological research for tracking blood flow, identifying lymphatic vessels, or studying cellular uptake and transport mechanisms due to its fluorescent properties.

While generally safe, fluorescein can cause allergic reactions in some individuals. Proper precautions are taken to minimize adverse effects, including using the smallest effective dose and ensuring that the patient has no known dye allergies.

Overall, fluorescein staining is a valuable, cost-effective diagnostic and research tool that provides critical insights into tissue health and functionality through simple application and fluorescence visualization.
