Fluidart, often referred to as acrylic pour painting, is a painting technique that uses flowing pigments to create abstract, marble-like patterns. The method emphasizes spontaneous color interaction and chance, yielding unique results with each application. Fluidart encompasses a range of pouring styles and surface manipulations.

Typical materials include acrylic paints thinned with a pouring medium (such as Floetrol, polymer-based mediums, glue and water) and a stable surface. Common techniques include dirty pour, where multiple colors are combined in a single cup; flip cup, where a cup of layered paint is inverted onto the surface; and swipe or drag methods to guide the flow. Additives like silicone oil are sometimes used to generate cellular patterns.

Surfaces suitable for fluidart include stretched canvases, wood panels, ceramic tiles, glass, and metal. Surfaces are usually prepared with primer or gesso to improve adhesion, and the finished work is protected with varnish or a resin coating to enhance gloss and durability. Color outcomes depend on factor such as paint-to-medium ratios, drying conditions, and the presence of additives.

Color behavior in fluidart can be influenced by layering, tilt states, and ambient temperature. Cells—small circular patterns—may appear when silicone or other additives interact with the paint. Drying times vary from about 24 to 72 hours or longer, depending on thickness and environmental conditions.

Historically, fluidart gained prominence in the 2010s through online tutorials and social media, building a broad community of hobbyists and artists. It is valued for accessibility and the unpredictability of results, though it requires practice to control layering and flow.

Safety considerations include adequate ventilation when using certain additives and pigments, and the use of gloves to minimize skin contact with materials.
