Flatslicing

Flatslicing is a technique used to partition a three-dimensional object or scalar field into a sequence of parallel flat cross-sections, called slices. The method relies on selecting an orientation and a thickness for the slices; the intersection of each slice plane with the object produces a two-dimensional cross-section that can be analyzed or visualized. In practice, flat slicing is employed in computer graphics, computational geometry, medical imaging, geology, and manufacturing, where understanding internal structure or planning fabrication requires planar cross-sections.

Implementation typically involves choosing a slicing direction, establishing a set of planes at regular intervals, and computing the intersection of each plane with the geometry or field. Common strategies include uniform spacing along the normal direction, adaptive spacing based on geometry complexity or data density, and rasterization or polygon clipping to extract 2D representations. Algorithms often build on established primitives such as plane-plane intersection, grid sampling, or marching-plane techniques.

Applications include volume visualization, where slices reveal internal features; finite element analysis, where slices provide planar sections for property evaluation; geological stratigraphy, where flat slices approximate layered rock formations; and additive manufacturing, where planning or inspection uses flat layers of constant thickness.

Advantages of flatslicing include conceptual simplicity, compatibility with parallel processing, and straightforward integration with existing 2D analysis tools. Limitations include potential loss of curved detail in cross-sections, sensitivity to slicing orientation, and computational cost for very fine slicing. The term is variably used across disciplines; in some contexts similar ideas are called cross-sections, lamination, or plane slicing.
