Flaskeknot

Flaskeknot, also known as bottle knot, is a simple, non-slipping knot used to tie a rope to a cylindrical object. It is particularly useful for securing a rope to the neck of a bottle or a similar tapered object. The knot is made by forming a series of turns around the object's neck, followed by a locking hitch.

To tie a flaskeknot, begin by taking the working end of the rope and passing it around the object, usually at the narrowest part of the neck. Then, make several turns around the object, working upwards or downwards depending on preference and the object's shape. The number of turns can be adjusted to create a tighter or looser fit. Once sufficient turns have been made, the working end is passed back through the turns or secured with a simple hitch, such as a half hitch or a clove hitch, to prevent the knot from unraveling.

The primary advantage of the flaskeknot is its ability to hold firmly without crushing the object it is tied around. This makes it suitable for use on glass bottles or other fragile items. It is also relatively easy to tie and untie, even after being subjected to significant load. While not as strong as some other utilitarian knots, its ease of use and specific application make it a practical choice for certain tasks. It is often seen in decorative applications, such as creating handles for bottles or as a decorative element in macrame.
