Flapsrekonstruktioner, often translated as flap reconstruction, is a surgical technique used in reconstructive surgery to restore form and function to damaged or missing tissues. This procedure involves mobilizing a section of tissue, known as a flap, from one part of the body to another. The flap contains its own blood supply, ensuring its survival in its new location.

There are several types of flap reconstructions. Local flaps utilize tissue from an adjacent area, minimizing donor site morbidity. Regional flaps, on the other hand, draw tissue from a more distant site but still within the same vascular territory. Free flaps are the most complex, requiring the detachment of the entire flap, including its feeding blood vessels and nerves, and then reattaching these to recipient vessels and nerves at the reconstruction site. This typically involves microsurgical techniques.

The decision to use a flap reconstruction depends on various factors, including the size and location of the defect, the patient's overall health, and the desired functional and aesthetic outcome. Common applications include breast reconstruction after mastectomy, head and neck reconstruction following tumor removal, and the repair of complex skin and soft tissue defects resulting from trauma or infection. While flap reconstructions are generally successful, potential complications can include flap failure due to vascular compromise, infection, or donor site issues.
