Flaggskeppet, also known as the *Flaggskuta* or "flagship" in Swedish, refers to the primary or most important vessel in a fleet, traditionally used by naval commanders to display their flag and coordinate operations. The concept dates back to early maritime history when ships were often named or designated based on their role within a fleet rather than their specific function.

In Swedish naval tradition, the term *flaggskeppet* has been historically significant, particularly during the Age of Sail. The flagship was not necessarily the largest or most powerful ship but rather the one carrying the admiral or commander-in-chief, whose flag it flew. This vessel served as the command center, facilitating communication and strategy implementation during battles or expeditions.

The role of the flagship evolved with naval warfare. During the 17th and 18th centuries, Swedish fleets, such as those under Charles XII or Gustavus Adolphus, relied on well-defined flag systems to denote rank and command. The flagship often carried the admiral’s personal quarters and was equipped with advanced signaling devices, including flags, lanterns, and later, semaphore systems.

Modern naval fleets have largely replaced the traditional flagship with specialized command ships or integrated command-and-control platforms. However, the term *flaggskeppet* remains part of Swedish maritime heritage, symbolizing leadership and coordination in naval operations.
