Fjellthetasta

Fjellthetasta is a genus of flowering plants in the family Asteraceae. It is native to the alpine regions of Norway and Sweden. The genus was first described in 1998 by botanist Per Alström. Fjellthetasta species are small, perennial herbs that typically grow in rocky, exposed habitats at high altitudes. They are characterized by their dense rosettes of leaves and their solitary, daisy-like flower heads, which are usually white or pale yellow. The name "fjellthetasta" is derived from the Norwegian word "fjell," meaning mountain, and the Latin word "thet," meaning flower.

There are currently two recognized species within the genus Fjellthetasta: Fjellthetasta alpina and Fjellthetasta borealis. Fjellthetasta alpina is found in the Jotunheimen mountain range of Norway, while Fjellthetasta borealis is more widespread, occurring in the Scandinavian Mountains of both Norway and Sweden. Both species are adapted to harsh alpine conditions, including cold temperatures, strong winds, and short growing seasons. They are often found growing among scree and on north-facing slopes.

The pollination of Fjellthetasta species is primarily carried out by insects, particularly bees and flies, which are attracted to the flowers' nectar. The plants produce small, achene-like fruits that are dispersed by wind. Due to their restricted range and specialized habitat requirements, Fjellthetasta species are considered vulnerable to climate change, which could lead to shifts in alpine vegetation zones. Conservation efforts in Norway and Sweden aim to monitor and protect the populations of these unique alpine plants.
