Fixedweekday

Fixedweekday is a scheduling concept used to describe events that recur on the same days of the week across multiple weeks. In a fixedweekday pattern, the days of the week are specified (for example, Monday and Thursday), and these days are treated as the occurrences of the event regardless of the calendar date. This contrasts with fixed-date scheduling, where events occur on specific calendar dates such as the 7th or the 23rd.

Implementation and rules: A fixedweekday schedule defines a set of weekdays and an overall timeframe, which may be a defined start and end date or an ongoing pattern. Exceptions are commonly used for holidays, weekends, or facility closures, with rules for pausing, rescheduling, or skipping instances.

Examples: A university course that meets every Tuesday and Thursday; a weekly staff standup on weekdays; a maintenance window every Sunday. In software tools, fixedweekday is represented by recurring rules that specify both the weekdays and any applicable time or duration, sometimes combined with a separate holiday calendar.

Benefits and limitations: The fixedweekday approach offers predictable cadence, easier staffing and resource planning, and simpler communication. It can, however, be inflexible in the face of holidays or date-specific requirements and may require frequent exception handling or periodic revisions to stay aligned with local calendars.
