Fixedpost

Fixedpost is a term used in construction and structural engineering to describe a post that is anchored rigidly to a foundation or base, allowing little or no rotation or translation at the connection. The defining characteristic of a fixed post is its end conditions: the base is restrained against movement in multiple directions and, in many cases, against rotation, forming a fixed or clamped end in the structural system. This contrasts with posts that are pinned or hinged at the base, which can rotate and transfer only shear and axial forces.

In framing and light-structure design, fixed posts contribute to higher moment transfer between the post and its supporting foundation. They increase overall frame stiffness and can reduce sway under wind or dynamic loads, but they also require careful detailing of connections and footing design. Achieving a fixed condition typically involves embedded elements such as concrete footings, base plates with anchor bolts, welds, or serrated seating that resists rotation. Proper alignment, tolerance control, and consolidation of the foundation are important to prevent unwanted settlement or rotation.

Common applications include building frames, gate and door posts, sign and light poles, guard rails, and retaining-wall supports where sustained load and resistance to rotation are important. Installation considerations cover soil bearing capacity, frost heave, settlement, corrosion protection, and thermal expansion. In design practice, engineers compare fixedpost behavior with hinged or partially restrained posts to select appropriate connections and footing details for safety and performance.
