Finbearbejdning, often translated as finishing or fine machining, refers to a group of manufacturing processes used to achieve very smooth, precise surfaces on a workpiece. These processes are typically the final stages of production, following rough machining operations, and are critical for meeting strict dimensional tolerances and aesthetic requirements. The primary goal is to remove small amounts of material to improve surface finish, accuracy, and functionality.

Common finbearbejdning techniques include grinding, lapping, honing, and polishing. Grinding uses abrasive wheels to remove material, achieving high precision and good surface finish. Lapping employs fine abrasive particles suspended in a liquid or paste between a workpiece and a lap, resulting in extremely smooth and flat surfaces. Honing utilizes abrasive stones to refine the internal surfaces of cylinders, commonly found in engines. Polishing is the most superficial process, using very fine abrasives to create a mirror-like finish, primarily for aesthetic purposes or to reduce friction.
