Finalités

Finalités is the plural form of finalité, a French term that denotes the ends or purposes toward which actions, policies, or processes are directed. It refers to the ultimate aim of an activity or organization and is often contrasted with the means used to achieve it. The concept appears in philosophy, law, administration, and everyday discourse, where it helps frame objectives within a broader mission.

In philosophy and ethics, finalités are linked to teleology—the study of ends in nature and action. The finalité of an agent or system signifies its intended end or goal. Ethical discussions repeatedly examine how ends relate to means, how priorities among ends are set, and whether ends should constrain or justify particular actions.

In law, governance, and policy, finalités articulate the aims of laws, programs, and institutions. They guide design, implementation, and evaluation, and should align with the entity’s mission. In data protection and research ethics, the finalité of processing or study must be legitimate, explicit, and limited to what is necessary; purposes may not be altered arbitrarily to justify new actions.
