Filtteröintiprosessien, or filtration processes, are methods used to separate solid particles from a fluid, which can be a liquid or a gas. This separation is achieved by passing the fluid through a filter medium that allows the fluid to pass but retains the solid particles. The effectiveness of a filtration process depends on several factors, including the type of filter medium used, the size of the particles to be removed, and the properties of the fluid.

Common filter media include porous materials like paper, cloth, ceramic, or specialized membranes. The choice of medium is critical; for instance, fine membranes are used for removing very small particles, while coarser materials might be sufficient for larger debris. The particle size distribution in the fluid also dictates the required pore size of the filter.

Filtration processes are widely employed across various industries. In water treatment, they are essential for removing suspended solids, sediment, and microorganisms to produce potable water. In the chemical industry, filtration is used to separate catalysts from reaction products or to purify intermediate and final products. The pharmaceutical industry relies heavily on filtration for sterilizing solutions and removing particulate matter from drug formulations. In air purification, filters remove dust, pollen, and other airborne contaminants. Automotive engines use oil filters to remove wear particles and contaminants from lubricating oil.

The principles of filtration can range from simple mechanical sieving to more complex processes like dead-end filtration, where the solid builds up on the filter surface, or cross-flow filtration, where the fluid flows parallel to the filter surface, continuously sweeping away retained solids. Backwashing or cleaning procedures are often incorporated to extend the lifespan of filter media.
