Filterunits

Filter units are modular processing elements that apply a filter transfer function to an input signal within a larger system. Each unit represents a filtering operation, such as shaping frequency content or suppressing certain ranges, and can be connected in series or parallel to form more complex responses. In digital implementations, a filter unit is described by a transfer function H(z) or a state-space model and is executed as an algorithm that produces output samples from input samples.

Common types implemented by filter units include low-pass, high-pass, band-pass, notch, and all-pass filters. The behavior of a unit is defined by parameters such as cutoff or center frequency, bandwidth, resonance (Q), gain, and the overall order of the filter. Units can be realized in various architectures, with second-order sections (biquads) being a standard building block. Other architectures include state-variable filters and lattice filters. In software and hardware environments, a filter unit typically exposes input and output ports and adjustable controls, enabling its integration into a signal-flow graph or processing pipeline.

Design and analysis of filter units focus on their frequency response, phase response, ripple in passbands, stopband attenuation, and overall stability. Design methods include converting analog prototypes to digital via bilinear transformation or impulse invariance, as well as direct digital design techniques. Practical considerations include numerical precision, quantization effects in fixed-point implementations, real-time computational cost, and introduced latency, which can influence the choice of architecture and order.

Filter units are widely used in audio processing (equalization, tone shaping), sensor data conditioning (noise and artifact removal), and control circuits requiring targeted frequency shaping. They also appear in image and video processing contexts where filtering operations modify spatial frequency content in data streams.
