Filterholders

Filterholders are devices used to hold and position filters, typically in photography and videography. Their primary function is to allow photographers to seamlessly integrate various filters into their lens setup without needing specialized filter threads on each lens. This universality makes them a valuable tool for those who frequently use multiple lenses or a wide array of filters.

The most common type of filterholder system is the slot-based design. These holders feature one or more slots where square or rectangular filters can be inserted. The number of slots can vary, with some holders accommodating two or three filters simultaneously, allowing for creative combinations like using a graduated neutral density filter to balance a bright sky with a darker foreground, and a polarising filter to reduce reflections. The filters are held securely in place by the holder's design, often with a spring-loaded mechanism or clips.

Another type of filterholder is the magnetic system. These holders utilize magnets to quickly attach and detach filters, often round ones. This offers a very fast way to change filters, which can be advantageous in rapidly changing shooting conditions. Some magnetic systems also employ a base adapter that screws onto the lens, allowing the magnetic holder and filters to be easily attached and removed from the lens.

Filterholders are constructed from various materials, including durable plastics and lightweight metals like aluminum. The design aims to be robust enough for field use while remaining as unobtrusive as possible to avoid vignetting, especially when using wide-angle lenses. The choice of filterholder often depends on the photographer's preferred filter size and material, as well as their shooting style and the types of effects they aim to achieve.
