Filmelmélet, often translated as film theory, is a field of study that explores the nature, aesthetics, and social impact of cinema. It seeks to understand how films create meaning, evoke emotions, and influence audiences. Film theory is not a single monolithic approach but rather a diverse collection of critical perspectives that have evolved over time.

Early film theories, such as Formalism, focused on the unique properties of film as an art form, emphasizing techniques like editing, mise-en-scène, and cinematography. Soviet Montage, for example, explored how the juxtaposition of shots could generate new meanings and ideological messages. Later developments saw the rise of auteur theory, which posited that the director is the primary author of a film, imbuing it with their personal vision.

In the mid-20th century, psychoanalytic film theory, drawing on the work of Freud and Lacan, examined how films engage with the unconscious desires and anxieties of viewers, often exploring themes of fantasy, identity, and spectatorship. Feminist film theory critically analyzed the representation of gender and power dynamics within cinema, highlighting patriarchal structures and advocating for more diverse portrayals.

More recent approaches include genre theory, which studies recurring conventions and patterns within specific film categories, and post-structuralist and deconstructionist theories, which question stable meanings and explore the inherent ambiguities of film texts. Film theory continues to engage with new technologies, global cinemas, and evolving societal concerns, remaining a dynamic and vital area of academic inquiry.
