Fieldsdemocracy is a theoretical framework for democratic participation that organizes decision-making around multiple social fields, such as economic, cultural, scientific, ecological, and technological domains. In this view, each field operates with its own norms, actors, and sources of legitimacy, while cross-field coordination seeks to align divergent interests through plural and polycentric governance mechanisms. The approach blends insights from field theory with contemporary debates on participatory and deliberative democracy, emphasizing that not all decisions are best made within a single centralized arena.

Origins and development are contested, but the concept has appeared in scholarly discussions since the early 2020s as a way to address the limitations of traditional nation-state or single-institution decision models in complex, interconnected societies. Proponents argue that fieldsdemocracy allows for more legitimate and responsive policy by recognizing specialized knowledge and vested interests in different domains and by creating field-specific forums for participation, research, and oversight.

Core elements include field-level assemblies or councils that enable stakeholders to voice concerns and propose policies, cross-field coordination bodies to manage interoperability and trade-offs, and transparent, time-bound pilot programs to test field-specific interventions before broader adoption. Digital platforms and hybrid governance venues are often proposed to lower barriers to participation while maintaining accountability.
