Feuerbestattungen, also known as cremation, is a process of reducing a dead body to its basic inorganic components by the application of heat. This practice has a long history and is observed in various cultures and religions around the world. In modern times, it is a widely accepted alternative to traditional burial.

The cremation process typically takes place in a specialized facility called a crematorium. The body, usually enclosed in a combustible container, is placed in a cremation chamber where it is subjected to extremely high temperatures, often exceeding 1,400 degrees Fahrenheit (760 degrees Celsius). The intense heat causes the organic materials to break down into gases and bone fragments. After the cremation process is complete, the remaining bone fragments are cooled, pulverized into a fine ash-like substance, and then placed into an urn.

Options include interring the urn in a cemetery, scattering the ashes in a meaningful location, or keeping them in a special place at home. They are also frequently selected for their flexibility in memorialization and can sometimes be more cost-effective. Many religious traditions permit or even encourage cremation, while others may have reservations.
