Fertigungsreihe

Fertigungsreihe is a German term used in manufacturing and operations management that describes a production run or manufacturing series. It refers to a sequence of units produced in a single set of manufacturing conditions, using the same tooling, process steps, and materials, for a defined period or quantity.

Key features of a Fertigungsreihe include a common product family or variant, a consistent production route, and minimal changeovers during the run. The lot size or batch is planned so that the line can produce efficiently before switching to a different product, configuration, or model. Quality control is typically applied to the entire run, with traceability tied to the lot or order number.

In practice, a Fertigungsreihe is distinct from the physical layout of a production line (Fertigungsstrasse) and from broader concepts like Serienfertigung (series production). It is a planning and execution unit used to optimize changeovers, setup times, and production scheduling. It is closely related to the concepts of batch sizing and lot sizing in manufacturing planning and is supported by enterprise systems such as ERP and MES to track orders, materials, and quality data.

Typical applications occur in discrete manufacturing industries, including automotive, electronics, and consumer goods, where a family of products shares the same manufacturing process for a defined quantity before a change or upgrade. Advantages include reduced setup time and improved process stability within the run, while disadvantages can involve higher inventory levels and potential longer lead times if demand for a different variant is sporadic.
