Ferriphilum is a genus of extremophilic bacteria belonging to the class Gammaproteobacteria. These microorganisms are known for their ability to thrive in highly acidic and metal-rich environments, such as acid mine drainages and bioleaching operations. The name "Ferriphilum" derives from Latin roots, with "ferrum" meaning iron and "philum" indicating affinity, reflecting the bacteria's propensity to oxidize ferrous iron (Fe2+) to ferric iron (Fe3+).

Ferriphilum species are chemolithoautotrophs, meaning they obtain energy by oxidizing inorganic substances, primarily ferrous iron. This metabolic activity plays a significant role in biogeochemical cycling, contributing to the formation of iron oxyhydroxides and influencing mineral dissolution and precipitation processes. Their ability to survive and function in extreme acidity (pH often below 3) and high metal concentrations makes them important for biotechnological applications, including bioleaching of sulfide ores and bioremediation of contaminated environments.

These bacteria are characterized by their thermotolerance and acidophilic nature, often thriving at temperatures between 30°C and 45°C.
