Fernzeugs
Fernzeugs, also known as fernweed or water ferns, are a group of aquatic plants belonging to the family Azollaceae. They are characterized by their small, fern-like leaves and the ability to fix nitrogen through a symbiotic relationship with cyanobacteria. Fernzeugs are commonly found in freshwater habitats, including ponds, lakes, and slow-moving rivers. They are often used in aquascaping and aquaponics due to their ability to improve water quality by reducing nitrates and phosphates.
There are two main species of fernzeugs: Azolla filiculoides and Azolla caroliniana. Azolla filiculoides is native
Fernzeugs have been used for centuries in traditional medicine and as a food source in some cultures.
Despite their many benefits, fernzeugs can also be invasive in some regions. They can outcompete native plants
