Felülettechnológia is the Hungarian term for surface technology. It encompasses the scientific and engineering principles related to the properties and modification of surfaces. This field is crucial in many industrial applications as the surface of a material often dictates its performance, durability, and interaction with its environment.

The primary goals of surface technology include improving wear resistance, corrosion protection, adhesion, electrical conductivity, thermal insulation, and aesthetic appearance. Various methods are employed to achieve these goals. These can be broadly categorized into surface treatment and surface coating techniques.

Surface treatment methods alter the existing surface without adding new material. Examples include heat treatments like hardening, case hardening, and nitriding, which modify the microstructure of the surface layer to enhance its mechanical properties. Mechanical treatments like grinding, polishing, and sandblasting also fall under this category, affecting surface roughness and morphology. Chemical treatments such as pickling and passivation remove unwanted surface layers or create protective oxide films.

Surface coating techniques involve applying a layer of different material onto the substrate surface. This can be achieved through a wide array of processes, including electroplating, electroless plating, physical vapor deposition (PVD), chemical vapor deposition (CVD), thermal spraying, painting, and powder coating. The choice of coating material and application method depends on the desired surface properties and the substrate material.
