Felgyorsul

Felgyorsul is a Hungarian verb meaning to accelerate or to speed up. It describes the action of a body or process becoming faster. The prefix fel- adds a sense of upward motion or increase, while gyorsul comes from gyors, fast. In everyday language it is used for vehicles, machines, and processes that gain speed: “A motor felgyorsult” (The engine sped up). In physics or more formal contexts, the term is related to felgyorsulás, the acceleration, defined as the rate of change of velocity over time. The noun felgyorsulás is often used in technical writing to denote acceleration; felgyorsítás is the act or mechanism of causing acceleration.

The verb felgyorsul is intransitive: the subject experiences the speeding up, not something else being sped up. To express making something speed up, Hungarian typically uses felgyorsít: “felgyorsítja a kocsit” (he accelerates the car).
