This condition is also known as leukopenia or agranulocytosis, depending on the specific type of white blood cells affected. White blood cells are a crucial component of the immune system, responsible for defending the body against infections and diseases.

A deficiency in white blood cells can arise from various causes. These include certain medical conditions, such as aplastic anemia, leukemia, and severe infections like sepsis. Additionally, some medications, particularly chemotherapy drugs and certain antibiotics, can suppress bone marrow function, leading to a decrease in white blood cell production. Exposure to radiation can also damage bone marrow and impair its ability to generate these vital cells.

Individuals with a significantly low white blood cell count are highly susceptible to infections.
