Feasting

Feasting refers to a large, celebratory meal or sequence of meals organized to mark a specific occasion or to display hospitality. It is distinguished from ordinary eating by intentional abundance, ceremony, and social purpose, often involving extended gatherings, special dishes, toasts, and rituals.

Across cultures and history, feasts have served religious, political, and communal functions. Examples include classical banquets in ancient Rome, medieval and Renaissance royal or aristocratic feasts, Chinese wedding banquets and harvest celebrations, South Asian wedding feasts, and indigenous practices such as potlatch, which combined redistribution with ceremony.
