Faserring

Faserring is a term used in materials science to describe a ring-shaped reinforcement of fibers applied around a central axis or core within a composite or textile structure. The word blends Faser (fiber) and Ring, reflecting the circular distribution of reinforcing material. In practice, a faserring is a continuous band of filaments or yarns arranged circumferentially around a mandrel or shaft to improve hoop strength and torsional stiffness.

Structure and function: The faserring acts as a load-bearing hoop that shares circumferential stresses and delays crack initiation by redistributing stresses away from critical regions. In cylindrical components such as shafts, rotors, or pressure vessel sections, faserrings can enhance damage tolerance under dynamic loading.

Manufacture: Faserring elements are produced by filament winding, wrap-around weaving, or automated fiber placement around a rotating or stationary core. The assembly is typically impregnated with resin or composite matrix and cured to form a consolidated reinforcement. Applications and status: Faserrings appear primarily in high-performance aerospace, automotive, and industrial components where weight and stiffness balance are critical.
