Farne

The Farne Islands, often referred to as the Farnes, are a group of around 15 small islands and rock stacks off the coast of Northumberland, England, near the village of Seahouses. Located in the North Sea, the Farnes are renowned as a major seabird breeding site and as a wintering area for grey seals. The best known islets include Inner Farne, Staple Island, and Longstone Island.

The islands host large colonies of seabirds, including Atlantic puffins, common guillemots, razorbills, kittiwakes, and terns, along with various gull species. Shags and oystercatchers are common, and the surrounding waters support marine life such as seals and dolphins. Nesting typically peaks in spring and early summer, making the area a focal point for birdwatchers and researchers. The islands’ rocky shores and grass-covered slopes provide breeding and haul-out habitat for these species.

Historically significant as a maritime landmark, the Longstone Lighthouse on Longstone Island has guided mariners since the 19th century. The Farnes are notable for the 1838 rescue of the Forfarshire (gracefully remembered as Grace Darling’s rescue) near the Longstone Lighthouse, a story that remains a defining part of the islands’ maritime heritage.

Conservation and access: The Farne Islands are designated a national nature reserve and are protected to conserve their important bird populations and marine life. Public access is possible by seasonal boat tours from Seahouses, with restrictions in place to minimize disturbance during breeding seasons and sensitive periods. Visitors are encouraged to follow guidelines to protect wildlife and fragile habitats.
