Platform terms of service and community guidelines influence what is allowed. Common ethical norms include attribution, respect for canon boundaries, consent in portrayal of real people or sensitive subjects, and adherence to age-appropriate guidelines.

Platforms and dissemination methods include dedicated fan-fiction sites, content wikis, blogs, and social media. Communities often organize around genres, ships, or franchises, and may publish meta-criticism alongside creative works. Fanwritings can serve as literary practice, fan engagement, and cultural commentary, while also intersecting with debates about copyright, creator rights, and the boundaries between homage and appropriation.
