Fantasiat

Fantasiat is the Finnish plural form of fantasia, and in Finnish usage refers to fantasies as mental images or daydreams, as well as to the literary and cultural genre of fantasy. The word fantasia originates from Latin fantasia, through Greek phantasia, and entered many languages with meanings related to imagination and appearance.

In literature and media, fantasy as a genre features magical or supernatural elements, invented worlds, and beings such as elves, dragons, or sorcerers. Common subgenres include high fantasy (set in fully realized fictional worlds), low or contemporary fantasy (set in the real world with magical elements), urban fantasy (occurring in modern cities), and dark fantasy. Tropes include quests, prophecies, magical artifacts, and protagonists who gain power or insight through trials.

Fantasy also appears in comics, cinema, video games, and tabletop games, notably in series and franchises that explore epic adventures or mythic reconstructions. The genre often overlaps with science fiction, mythic fiction, and children's literature, allowing a wide range of tones from whimsical to grave.

In everyday use, fantasias also denote imaginative thinking, daydreams, or creative planning, sometimes serving as a mental space for exploration or wish fulfilment, distinct from beliefs about reality.

Historically, modern fantasy grew from literary fairy tales and mythologies, gaining mainstream popularity in the 19th and 20th centuries through authors such as J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, and Ursula K. Le Guin, and later through film and games. Today it spans novels, short stories, comics, films, and interactive media.
