Familiemediation is a form of alternative dispute resolution in which a neutral mediator assists family members in resolving disputes arising from personal relationships. Typical matters include divorce or separation, child custody and visitation, parenting plans, property division, financial support, relocation, and other family dynamics. The process emphasizes voluntary participation, confidentiality, and collaborative problem-solving rather than adversarial litigation.

In most settings, participants attend sessions with the mediator who helps them identify interests, generate options, and negotiate a mutually acceptable agreement. The mediator does not decide the outcome or provide legal advice; rather, they facilitate communication, clarify misunderstandings, and help structure workable solutions. Attorneys are often consulted separately to advise on legal rights and to draft a formal settlement or court order if the parties reach agreement.

Outcomes of familiemediation can take the form of a non-binding memorandum of understanding, a formal settlement, or a consent order filed with a court. Benefits frequently cited include lower cost and time compared with litigation, greater control over results, preservation of relationships, and increased likelihood of voluntary compliance with an agreement. However, mediation may not be suitable in cases involving significant safety concerns, domestic violence, coercion, severe power imbalances, or when one party is unwilling to negotiate in good faith.

Some courts encourage or require mediation in family matters, and professional standards for mediators emphasize neutrality, confidentiality, and competence.
